Description

Description

Alpha-Arbutin is a purified glycosylated hydroquinone derivative used in advanced cosmetic systems for uneven tone and visible discoloration. The alpha-anomer is structurally distinct from beta-arbutin and is valued for strong interaction with the copper-containing tyrosinase system.

Chemical & Technical Profile

INCI: Alpha-Arbutin. CAS No.: 84380-01-8. Molecular formula: C12H16O7. Molecular weight: 272.25 g/mol. Physical form: white crystalline powder. Functional class: skin-conditioning / tone-evening active. Alpha-Arbutin is water-soluble and is particularly suited to aqueous serums, gels, essences, lotions, and emulsion systems.

Mechanism of Action

Alpha-Arbutin acts primarily through inhibition of tyrosinase activity. It interacts with the enzyme’s active site and reduces conversion of melanogenic substrates required for melanin synthesis. Experimental studies have shown inhibition of cellular tyrosinase activity and reduction of melanin synthesis without requiring suppression of tyrosinase gene expression.

Formulation Guidelines

Dissolve completely in purified water or a controlled aqueous premix before incorporation. Addition during cool-down is preferred to minimize unnecessary thermal exposure. Maintain the finished formulation within a mildly acidic to near-neutral environment and avoid prolonged exposure to strongly acidic, strongly alkaline, or high-temperature processing conditions. Alpha-Arbutin combines well with niacinamide, N-acetyl glucosamine, selected vitamin C derivatives, humectants, and barrier-support systems when the complete pH and stability requirements are compatible.

Compatibility & Stability

Monitor pH drift, color, clarity, precipitation, and long-term chemical stability. In clear serums, inspect for haze or microcrystallization after low-temperature storage and temperature cycling, because apparently clear fresh batches may become unstable during distribution. Avoid unnecessary exposure to elevated temperature and uncontrolled hydrolytic conditions. Do not treat Alpha-Arbutin, beta-arbutin, and botanical extracts containing arbutin as interchangeable raw materials.

R&D, Scale-Up & Quality Control

Alpha Arbutin Powder should be qualified against identity, color, pH, solution clarity, and low-temperature crystallization, using a retained reference where visual change is relevant.

Packaging, Shipping & Storage

Supplied in a sealed aluminum pouch to minimize moisture and environmental exposure. Store tightly closed in a cool, dry location away from direct light and excessive heat. After opening, reseal promptly to limit repeated moisture exposure during laboratory and production handling.

Applications

Brightening serums, spot-care systems, moisturizers, essences, facial gels, lotions, and multi-active tone-care formulations.
