Description

Description

Sorbeth-30 Tetraoleate is a lipophilic nonionic surfactant widely used in cleansing oils and balms to create self-emulsifying rinse-off systems. Its multiple oleate groups provide strong oil compatibility while the polyoxyethylene portion enables spontaneous emulsification when the product contacts water.

Chemical & Technical Profile

INCI / Identity Sorbeth-30 Tetraoleate
CAS No. 63089-86-1
Molecular Formula Ethoxylated sorbitol tetraoleate mixture
Molecular Weight Not applicable
Physical Form Amber viscous liquid
Solubility Oil-soluble/dispersible; self-emulsifies on water contact
Functional Category Nonionic lipophilic cleansing emulsifier

Mechanism of Action / Technical Function

During application the surfactant remains dissolved in the oil phase and helps solubilize sebum, makeup, and lipophilic soils. On rinsing, hydrated ethoxylate chains migrate toward water and form fine oil-in-water dispersions, allowing the oil phase and dissolved soils to rinse away. Performance depends on surfactant/oil ratio and polarity of the carrier blend.

Formulation Guidelines

Blend directly into cleansing oils or the molten oil phase of balms. Optimize level by rinse profile rather than by viscosity. Highly polar esters and very nonpolar hydrocarbons may require different surfactant ratios. In balms, add before the wax network sets and verify that the emulsifier does not soften the structure excessively.

Compatibility & Stability

Monitor self-emulsification, rinse cleanliness, oil separation, color, odor, and low-temperature stability. Oleate groups are unsaturated and can oxidize; antioxidant support is useful in long-shelf-life anhydrous products.

R&D, Scale-Up & Quality Control

For Sorbeth-30 Tetraoleate, incoming and in-process QC should control Sorbeth-30 Tetraoleate color, odor, self-emulsification, and oxidative condition. Pilot transfer should lock emulsifier-to-oil ratio, wax-network compatibility, and cooling in balm systems, because these variables directly influence reproducibility. Release the formulation only after the cleansing oil/balm self-emulsifies rapidly without separation, wax softening, or rancid odor. Rinse emulsification should also be checked after low-temperature storage.

Packaging, Shipping & Storage

Supplied in a tightly sealed liquid container. Store cool, protected from direct light, air, and excessive heat.

Applications

Cleansing oils, cleansing balms, makeup removers, bath oils, rinse-off facial oils, and self-emulsifying anhydrous cleansers.
