Description

Description

Squalane is the fully hydrogenated form of squalene and a highly stable branched hydrocarbon emollient. Removal of the unsaturation present in squalene dramatically improves oxidative stability while preserving excellent spreadability and compatibility with skin lipids, making squalane a benchmark emollient for premium facial oils and emulsions.

Chemical & Technical Profile

INCI / Identity Squalane
CAS No. 111-01-3
Molecular Formula C30H62
Molecular Weight 422.82 g/mol
Physical Form Clear colorless oil
Solubility Oil-soluble; insoluble in water
Functional Category Hydrocarbon emollient / sensory modifier

Mechanism of Action / Technical Function

Squalane functions primarily through lubrication, reduction of surface friction, and reinforcement of the lipid phase. It forms a lightweight hydrophobic film that reduces water loss without the heavy waxy feel of more occlusive hydrocarbons. Because it is chemically saturated, it contributes little unsaturation-driven oxidation burden to the formula.

Formulation Guidelines

Add directly to the oil phase or use as the main carrier in anhydrous serums. It is compatible with most oils, esters, oil-soluble vitamins, ceramides, and lipophilic antioxidants. In emulsions, account for its low polarity when selecting emulsifier balance. In facial oils, use it to reduce greasiness and improve slip of heavier botanical oils.

Compatibility & Stability

Monitor odor, color, peroxide value where relevant, and emulsion stability. Although squalane is highly oxidation-resistant, contamination with unstable oils can still drive overall rancidity. Package compatibility with elastomers should be confirmed in high-squalane systems.

R&D, Scale-Up & Quality Control

Squalane Oil should be qualified against Squalane clarity, color, odor, and oxidation cleanliness, using a retained reference where visual change is relevant. During scale-up, document oil-phase addition, exposure to less-stable botanical oils, and filling temperature and reproduce the laboratory sequence without unplanned thermal or shear exposure. A practical release gate is confirmation that the blend remains odor-neutral and phase-stable without oxidation-driven sensory drift.

Packaging, Shipping & Storage

Supplied in a tightly sealed liquid container. Store cool, protected from direct light and excessive heat. Keep closed to prevent contamination.
